Iwo
Published in Paperback by United States Naval Inst. (October, 1994)
Authors: Richard Wheeler and Richard Wheller
Average review score:

A taste of the invasion
As someone who reads a lot of military history, I have to say this book keeps you in the action! Written from the point of view of the Marines fighting on Iwo Jima and the Japanese defending it, you're kept in the heat of the battle. Richard Wheeler's graphic descriptions of death, life, and sometimes humor in this "10 Day operation" will amaze and shock readers into seeing why "uncommon valor was a common virtue". The book is not a grand strategic overview of all the forces in the operation. It does give the reader a look at the preparations the Japanese made, the Army Air Corps' use for the island, and the maneuvers the various Marine divisions did, or tried to do. Also contained is a complete background on the famous flag raising. The book is really the story of the individual Marines and how they lived and fought on the island. Marine's names and backgrounds abound due to the author's first-hand knowledge. For anyone that saw Saving Private Ryan this is the Pacific version. A must read for anyone interested in the Pacific campaigns of World War II, the war in general, or the Marines.

The Jahangirnama: Memoirs of Jahangir, Emperor of India
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (November, 1999)
Authors: Jahangir and Wheeler M. Thackston
Average review score:

Miniature painting at its best
I would recommend this book for serious folks interested in the art of Mogul Miniatures. Jahangir was a very special king and this book sheds light on the magic of the time period. It is a big and physically heavy book but such a joy to read. You can glimpse into the interests and lives of the royality and experience their lives in detail. The authors have gone into alot of research and there are many descriptions to dates, calendar, language and art. The book itself is a work of art. The reproductions of the miniature paintings, including many portraits of the royal court, are excellent. It is about time that art such as this is understood, recognized and appreciated. This book leads the way.

The King of the World: "The Padshahnama": An Imperial Mughal Manuscript from the Royal Library, Windsor Castle
Published in Hardcover by Thames and Hudson Ltd (03 March, 1997)
Authors: Milo C. Beach, Ebba Koch, and Wheeler Thackston
Average review score:

Mesmerizing
Unless you marry into the British Royal family, it is virtually impossible to ever personally view all the paintings featured in this book (I believe Windsor Castle displays only one painting per year). This book is the next best thing. How else can one marvel at the equisite design, detail and color presented in these Mughal paintings? While the text is written in the usual art history academia mumbo jumbo (meaning dry dry dry), the pictures speak for themselves. One can easily find a sentence here or a paragraph there that will give added insight to the paintings. But the text isn't required to appreciate the magnificance of these art pieces from Shah Jahan's era.

C Hope
While visiting friends in Key West, I read this book and was absolutely thrilled by the detail and imagination. You will never see Jacob and Rachel the same. I realize that Jacob was not the victim, but Leah was. Imagine your little sister marrying before you. Imagine a father with two daughters - the youngest being favored by men and the oldest having trouble just getting a date. READ THIS BOOK! It's heart warming. I am reading every book by Lois Erickson because of this one... Thanks!

A great book, but a lousy review... read on
I must say first off that I love all of the Holly Pond Hill books, and rate all of them 5 stars. The drawings, writings and overall reading are pure joy! But.... I was extremely disappointed upon receiving this book because it is the same exact book as "Tea with Victoria Rose". Only the title and cover are different. I was very dissapointed that a usually reputable publisher would try to dupe me this way. I do recommend the book for Holly Pond Hill fans, because it is a good read. I just will be more careful in the future on my purchases.
